Remember when your mom, or maybe your grandma used to put rollers in her wet hair and left them in overnight?

Well, another form of heatless styling is making a comeback - heatless curls! Many women not only under 40 but over 40 are looking for damage-free and easier ways to cut the time it takes to style their hair in half - or even reduce it to 10 minutes!

As we age, our hair may become sensitive to breakage, hair dying, bleaching, and the biggest culprit - heat styling. A LONG time stylist friend of mine told me that low porosity hair becomes apparent after 40 - especially as we enter perimenopause, we lower in hormones, and drop in iron. Minimizing heat styling can greatly reduce hair breakage if kept to only 2-3 times a week. This is especially vital if wanting to grow hair longer! My mom used to bowl-cut me - so length is very important to me at 40. Using heatless methods for curling my hair has FOREVER changed my hair care routine and my overall outlook on my hair health - more to come on actual products to keep hair strong and beautiful!

Heatless curlers are all the craze right now, and I am going to run through the three most popular, with some tips on how to maintain them!

The long rod heatless curling method

This roller is typically a long rod that wears on the top of your head - you split your hair into two sections and then wrap each side along the rod, and then tie it with a scrunchie at each end. The curls that result are my FAVORITE and resemble a curling iron job - but better!

Multiple heatless rod method

There are sets that you can buy which will come with up to 6 rods that are about 6 to 7 inches long. They have a bendable material surrounded by a foam or silk filling, with either a velvet or satin finish. You separate your hair into 6 sections and starting with the ends of hair in each section, you roll the hair around the rod, then close the ends when near your scalp.

Three large rod method

These rods are larger and longer, producing larger curls for a more 'blowout' look. You only part three total sections - the front of your hair, the middle, and the back, rolling straight UP and down to your scalp. I do not typically use this method because I want more curls than a blowout.

Preparation and Tips

For BEST results, it is suggested that you do heatless curls on hair that has been recently curled, blowdried with a roundbrush (especially those with natural curly hair) or airstyled with a tool like the Dyson Airwrap curler. At the end of the day and for up to 7 days (depending on how long you can go without washing your hair) after you have your hair styled in one of these ways, you will use your favorite dry shampoo to rid your hair of excess oil. Next, you want to brush your hair out and ensure there are no tangles, and section it depending on which method used. Then for best results - airdry cream (what the heck is this?!) applied to the DRY hair will better formulate those curls when taking the curler(s) out. After applying the hair curler, you can then wrap all your hair with a large silk scarf or bonnet.
